I had been in the market for a suitcase style solar kit for a while and finally picked the Acopower 120W system. This appears to be a brand new product by Acopower and it fit my criteria very well. Specifically I wanted something light (under 10lbs), easy to carry / setup, high watts, with a charge controller that had an informative and easy to read LED display, battery terminal clips, MC4 connections and multiple USB charge ports. Basically I got everything I wanted.
Today I took it out to test its capabilities. I pulled the 12v deep cycle battery from my camper and setup the system in my front lawn. The unit is pretty big when folded out, and has built in legs on each panel to hold it in the right position. (The unit also has grommets for hanging). Setup was easy and while the instructions are sparse there really isn't much to it other than setting the correct battery type on the controller. The quality of the unit is what I expected. The construction looks good, no loose parts, no indication it won't handle the abuse it will likely get over time.
Testing: Today is a early fall day with billowy clouds and lost of sun breaks (Seattle area). It allowed me to test in most conditions.
- Heavy Filtered Sun:: 1.6A
- Medium Filtered Sun: 3.2A
- Light Filtered Sun: 4.1A
- Full Sun: 4.3 A
I was hoping for more Amps from full sun. The review of some of the hard case models reported 5+ Amps in those conditions but they were also in Arizona so I need to take that into account. I did test the USB ports as well and am charging my kindle as I write this. I was hoping I could use the USB charging capabilities while the controller was not hooked up to the battery, but that is not the case. The battery must be connected to support USB charging.
I had ready other reviews of Acopower that mentioned their superior customer service. I would agree it is very good. I had a little trouble finding the unit on Amazon and contacted Acopower via email. They got back to me right away and pointed me in the right direction. Only hiccup as been in registering the product for the warranty. This being one of their new products, it is not yet listed in their Warranty product list, so I have an email into them to correct that.
